The mailman knocked on my door yesterday with something I have been waiting for for an eternity... Bec Oakley's newest book Jake Rides the Rollercoaster!
We met Jake last year when he lost his first tooth and was very worried about just what was going to happen. Jake talked about literal thinking and how what other people said translated in his mind.
The Goofy child fell in love with the story, especially the rhyming words and the cat that was going to get Jake's tongue.
This year, Jake wants to ride a rollercoaster called Thundering Steel.
"I'd read every page and learned every fact.
I knew every twist and turn of that track,
and now was my chance to see how it feels
to go flying along on Thundering Steel."
If you have ever been to an amusement park, you know the sensory nightmare that goes along with it. In Jake Rides the Rollercoaster, Bec talks about sensory issues- what they are, how they feel, and some ways to deal with them.
I love the way Bec keeps you on the edge of your seat, eager to read the next sentence. I love that the books are written in a way to describe some of the hard parts of autism, the reasons for them, and offers really great solutions.
I love that she shows that everyone has difficulty somewhere and that not only are Jake's friends ready and willing to help him figure out what to do, Jake also has good solutions for his friends. I love that the book is an entertaining and highly amusing story that educates about autism, sets real examples of friendship and acceptance, while showing that children with autism can contribute to friendships and relationships.
